Caspar David Friedrich
The leading German Romantic landscape painter, born at Greifswald on the Baltic coast. He studied in Copenhagen from 1794 to 1798 and then settled in Dresden. His landscapes carry emotional and spiritual meaning, and helped make the sublime a central idea of Romanticism.
