El Greco

Born Doménikos Theotokópoulos on Crete, he trained in the island's Byzantine tradition, worked in Venice and Rome, and in 1577 moved to Toledo in Spain. His intensely dramatic, personal style puzzled his contemporaries and was rediscovered in the 20th century. He usually signed his paintings in Greek letters.
