Gustav Klimt
The first president of the Vienna Secession. He is known for richly patterned, gold-flecked portraits and decorations, and for quieter square landscapes painted in summer.

As a student around 1883, Klimt made copies after Velázquez's royal children in the imperial collection in Vienna, and he came back to the Spanish painter all his life. Erich Lederer remembered him saying there were only two painters: Velázquez and himself.

Hodler's 1904 show at the Vienna Secession was his international breakthrough, and the Leopold Museum names him an important inspiration to Klimt, Moser and Schiele. Klimt had invited him to the first Secession exhibition in 1897.

Founded 3 April 1897 by Klimt (first president), Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann and Joseph Maria Olbrich. Klimt, Hoffmann and Moser resigned on 14 June 1905.
