Jan Matejko
Poland's best-known history painter, who spent almost all his life in Kraków. At a time when Poland had been partitioned and had no state of its own, he painted the turning points of its past. As head of the city's art school he taught a generation that included Stanisław Wyspiański and Józef Mehoffer.
