Jan Toorop
Born in Java and trained in the Netherlands, he moved between Symbolism, Art Nouveau and pointillism. He led the Dutch Luminist movement, whose bright, dotted colour drew the young Mondrian.

Toorop drew Mondrian's attention to the Zeeland resort of Domburg, and his Domburg canvases at the 1908 St Lucas exhibition converted Mondrian to Luminism; the two became its leading Dutch representatives (1908-11).
