A life in paintings

- 1652Was influenced by Carel FabritiusDelft
Fabritius settled in Delft around 1650 and joined its painters' guild in 1652. Unlike his teacher Rembrandt, he set figures against light backgrounds and studied the subtleties of daylight, and Britannica credits him with influencing both Pieter de Hooch and Johannes Vermeer. The once-popular idea that Vermeer was his pupil has no hard evidence.

- 1655Was influenced by Pieter de HoochDelft
Fellow members of the Delft painters' guild in the late 1650s, the two painted the same kind of quiet, sunlit Dutch homes. Historians long assumed Vermeer learned from de Hooch, and one of Vermeer's later letter scenes is said to follow his example; newer technical evidence suggests the influence may also have run the other way.
