Kazimir Malevich
An avant-garde painter and theorist, born near Kyiv to a Polish family, whose work pioneered abstract painting. Early on he absorbed Impressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism and Cubism, and in 1915 he founded Suprematism, a painting of pure geometric shapes.
