Marsden Hartley

An American Modernist painter, poet and essayist from Lewiston, Maine, who learned from the Cubists in Paris and Berlin. Alfred Stieglitz gave him a solo show at his 291 gallery in 1909, and he arrived at a personal Expressionism, strongest in his late paintings of the Maine landscape.
