Paul Sérusier
A Paris art student who went to Brittany in 1888 with a letter of introduction to Gauguin and came back with a small, almost abstract study painted under his direction. His friends at the Académie Julian made it their emblem and founded the Nabis, a group named after a Hebrew word for prophets. He later settled in Brittany, taught, and set out his ideas in a short book on painting.

In 1888 the young Sérusier joined the artists around Gauguin at Pont-Aven and painted a small, near-abstract study under his close supervision, using pure, flat colour. His friends made that panel the emblem of the Nabis.

Nabis
Young painters from the Académie Julian who took their name from a Hebrew word for prophets. They admired Gauguin and Cézanne, treated a small panel Sérusier painted under Gauguin's direction in 1888 as their emblem, and held their last exhibition in 1900.

Pont-Aven School
The artists' colony at the Breton town of Pont-Aven, active from the 1850s into the early 20th century. Gauguin, who spent long periods there in the late 1880s and early 1890s, became its leading figure, and many painters around him took up bold, pure colour.
