Several generations of American landscape painters, working from about 1825 to 1870, whose vision grew out of Romanticism; it was the first native school of painting in the United States. It began with the Hudson River Valley and the Catskill, Adirondack and White Mountains, and its later painters travelled as far as the American West and South America.
