Under the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), painters known as the Individualists rebelled against many of painting's traditional rules and worked in freer brushwork. In the 18th and 19th centuries, commercial cities such as Yangzhou and Shanghai became art centres, where wealthy merchant patrons encouraged bold new work.
