Anna Brøndum grew up in her parents' hotel at Skagen, where the visiting painters stayed. In 1880 she married one of them, Michael Ancher, and kept painting when women were expected to stop.

Many of Michael Ancher's paintings first hung in the dining room of the Brøndum hotel, where Anna grew up. In 1946 the whole dining room was moved into the Skagens Museum.
