Story

The Infanta in Vienna

Madrid in 1659 and Vienna in 1916: a Spanish princess's portrait sent to the emperor she was promised to, and the Viennese painter who copied Velázquez's royal portraits there as a student and later said there were only two painters, Velázquez and himself.

By the mid-1650s Velázquez was the king's palace chamberlain as well as his painter, working in Madrid's royal palace. The king's daughter Margarita Teresa was five.

Margarita Teresa was promised from childhood to her uncle Leopold, the emperor in Vienna. Portraits of her were sent ahead so he would know his bride; she joined him in 1666.
