About this artwork
By Paul Klee
Created late in his career, Rich Port reflects Paul Klee’s mature style, where abstraction and representation merge into symbolic structures. The composition resembles a harbor filled with layered forms that suggest buildings, ships, and architectural elements without clearly defining them.
Klee organizes the scene through color blocks and rhythmic patterns, creating a sense of density and complexity. Rather than depicting a real location, the “port” becomes an imaginative construction, shaped by memory, structure, and visual logic. The work reflects his continued interest in systems, balance, and the relationship between line, color, and space.
Painted during a difficult period of illness and political exile, the painting can also be read as an inner landscape. The clustered forms and enclosed composition suggest both richness and tension, turning the idea of a harbor into something psychological as well as spatial.
