About this artwork
By Diego Rivera
Portrait of Mr Kawashima and Foujita (Portrait de Messieurs Kawashima et Foujita) is a 1914 oil and collage on canvas by Diego Rivera, created during his Cubist period in Paris. The work depicts two Japanese artists — Riichirō Kawashima and Tsuguharu Foujita — who were close friends and studio-mates active in Montparnasse's cosmopolitan art scene. Rivera painted it at a moment when he was deeply immersed in Cubism under the influence of Picasso and Braque. The composition reflects the fragmented planes and multiple viewpoints characteristic of Analytic Cubism, while incorporating collage elements. Both subjects were part of the École de Paris, the loose community of foreign artists working in Paris in the early twentieth century. Foujita would later become one of the most celebrated painters of that generation.
