About this artwork
By Camille Pissarro
Jalais Hill, Pontoise depicts the hill of Les Jalais at l'Hermitage, viewed from the Chemin des Mathurins near Pissarro's home in Pontoise, just northwest of Paris. The composition is structured around a network of sweeping curves: a broad road that leads the eye inward toward sunlit strollers, the rising hill along the right edge, and the broad backdrop of the Jalais Hill itself, marked by linear hedges. A tight cluster of poplar trees anchors the midground, while the village dissolves into a jumble of geometric and natural forms beyond. Strong, confident brushwork and broad, flat areas of color reveal the influence of Gustave Courbet and Camille Corot. Shown at the Salon of 1868, the painting won enthusiastic praise from progressive critics and helped establish Pissarro as an innovative painter of the rural French landscape. Its ambitious scale and bold composition anticipate his participation in the first Impressionist Exhibition of 1874.
