The Other Shore is a 1923 oil on canvas by the American painter Robert Spencer, a leading figure of the Pennsylvania Impressionist colony centered in New Hope, Bucks County. The composition looks across a river toward a cluster of buildings on the opposite bank, with a bridge and a group of figures animating the scene. Though associated with the New Hope painters, Spencer differed from many of his colleagues by favoring towns, mills, and the working life of the Delaware River region over pure landscape. The painting reflects his characteristic interest in everyday architecture and human activity rather than idealized nature. It entered the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 1941 as a bequest of Henry Ward Ranger through the National Academy of Design.
