About this artwork
By José Ferraz de Almeida Júnior
Saudade (Longing) is a late genre painting by Brazilian artist José Ferraz de Almeida Júnior. Painted in 1899, the work belongs to the final year of the artist's life and reflects his mature interest in intimate, everyday subjects. Its title invokes the Portuguese word saudade, often understood as a feeling of longing, absence, or emotional distance. The painting is part of the collection of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, which holds one of the most important groups of Almeida Júnior's work. Like many of his late pictures, it combines academic naturalism with a distinctly Brazilian sense of place and feeling.
