About this artwork
By Edward Hopper
Edward Hopper's Nighthawks shows a small group of people gathered at a brightly lit late-night diner, seen from the empty city street outside. The painting compresses urban life into a spare, theatrical scene: glass, counter, light, and figures are arranged with precise clarity, yet the relationships among the people remain unresolved. Hopper completed the work in early 1942, shortly after the United States entered World War II, and the painting quickly became one of the defining images of modern American city life. Its cinematic framing and charged stillness have made it a touchstone for later writers, filmmakers, and artists, even as its emotional meaning remains deliberately open.
