William de Leftwich Dodge's Italy - The Mediterranean is a gouache view of the Mediterranean coast made with opaque watercolor on paper. The scene brings together sea, shore vegetation, and sailboats in a bright, freely handled composition. Dodge's quick strokes and transparent-looking layers give the work an airy coastal atmosphere while preserving the compact scale of a work on paper. The Smithsonian American Art Museum records the work as part of its collection, though it is not currently on view.
