About this artwork
By Johannes Vermeer
The Little Street is one of Vermeer's rare exterior scenes and one of his most intimate views of Delft. Rather than presenting a grand cityscape, he focuses on ordinary houses, worn brickwork, whitewash, shutters, doorways, and small figures absorbed in daily activity. The Rijksmuseum identifies the location as Vlamingstraat 40-42 in Delft, noting that Vermeer's aunt Ariaentgen Claes lived in the house on the right from around 1645 until 1670. The painting turns a modest urban facade into a carefully balanced study of texture, geometry, and quiet domestic life. Its close attention to cracked masonry and weathered surfaces gives the scene a physical immediacy unusual even within Vermeer's small body of work.
