Bailey's Beach, Newport, R.I.

Childe Hassam painted this view of Newport in 1901. He was an American Impressionist, known for using loose brushstrokes to capture light and atmosphere. Hassam began his career as an illustrator in Boston and later studied art in Paris. After returning home, he often painted modern cities and New England vacation spots. Bailey's Beach was a private resort used by the wealthy families who spent their summers in Newport. The Art Institute of Chicago explains that the painting shows their world of leisure while reminding us that many people were not allowed to enter it.
