Street in Ávila

Diego Rivera painted Street in Ávila in 1908, when he was still a young art student in Europe. A scholarship from the governor of Veracruz allowed him to leave Mexico and travel to Spain in 1907. In Madrid, he studied with the Spanish painter Eduardo Chicharro. This was before Rivera tried Cubism in Paris and long before his large public murals made him famous. The painting is now held by the Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City. It shows an early stage in Rivera's career, before he used what he learned in Europe to create a new kind of public art in Mexico.
