Strawberry Tea Set

By Childe Hassam

1912American Impressionism

Childe Hassam painted "Strawberry Tea Set" in 1912 as part of a series of indoor scenes near windows. He began his career as an illustrator in Boston and later studied art in Paris. Hassam became a leading American Impressionist, using loose brushstrokes to capture changing light. He was better known for city streets and gardens, but this series brought his attention inside the home. LACMA identifies the painting as one of several works showing a single person in a quiet room. It shows how Hassam could bring the light and energy of Impressionism to an ordinary moment of daily life.
