A Reclining Tiger

By Géza Vastagh

Realism

Géza Vastagh was a Hungarian painter best known for his pictures of animals. He was born in Kolozsvár in 1866 and came from a family of painters and sculptors. Vastagh studied art in Munich before returning to Budapest. He traveled in North Africa and visited European zoos so he could study large animals closely. His animal paintings became known outside Hungary, and he received an important state gold medal in 1894. Records confirm that A Reclining Tiger is an oil painting by Vastagh, but its date and current owner are unknown.
