Woman Bathing Her Feet in a Brook

Camille Pissarro worked on this painting in 1894–1895 near his home in Éragny, France. Born on the Caribbean island of Saint Thomas, he became one of the founders of French Impressionism. Pissarro was the only artist to take part in all eight Impressionist exhibitions. He also advised younger painters such as Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. A letter to his son Lucien shows that he was working on this picture in November 1894. The Art Institute of Chicago says that he changed the painting several times and made another version now held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work shows Pissarro bringing the same patience he gave to landscapes into a scene of rural daily life.
