Türkisches Café

August Macke painted Türkisches Café after visiting Tunisia with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet in April 1914. During the trip, all three artists experimented with new ways of using light and color. Macke belonged to a German artists' group called the Blue Rider and also learned from modern French painting. His time in Tunisia gave him new places and everyday subjects to explore. The Lenbachhaus dates this oil painting to 1914. Macke was killed in the First World War only a few months later, at the age of twenty-seven.
