Apple Harvest

Camille Pissarro completed Apple Harvest in 1888 while trying a new way of painting. He placed small touches of pure color next to one another so they would mix in the viewer's eye. Pissarro learned this method from the younger artists Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. The Dallas Museum of Art says that he worked on the painting for two years and made more than one hundred drawings and studies. Its subject also continued his long interest in farm work and rural life. Pissarro later decided that the slow method limited the freedom he valued, showing that he was always willing to question his own experiments.
