About this artwork
By José Pinelo Llull
José Pinelo Llull painted Páteo in 1893, when his work was beginning to reach audiences outside Spain. Born in Cádiz, he studied art in Seville and later continued his training in Rome. After returning home, he became known for landscapes painted outdoors in southern Spain. Pinelo also organized exhibitions of Spanish art in North and South America. He began showing work in Brazil and the United States in the early 1890s and later found buyers in Argentina. The painting's place in Brazil's Museu Mariano Procópio reflects Pinelo's important role in bringing Spanish art to Latin American audiences.
