Dismounted: The Fourth Troopers Moving the Led Horses

Frederic Remington painted Dismounted in 1890 as he was becoming famous for pictures of the American West. Born in New York State, he traveled in western territories and used those experiences in his magazine illustrations. The title describes a cavalry method used when soldiers fought on foot. One out of every four soldiers stayed mounted and managed the other horses. Remington studied military equipment and movement carefully so his scenes would appear convincing. A printed version of the painting appeared in The Century Magazine in 1892 and brought it to a much larger audience. Now at the Clark Art Institute, the work helped shape the popular image of the American West for generations of viewers.
