Portrait of Modigliani

By Jeanne Hébuterne

1919Modernism

"Portrait of Modigliani is a 1919 work attributed to Jeanne Hébuterne, the French painter and partner of Amedeo Modigliani. The attribution is not settled, and the work has also been attributed to Modigliani himself. Hébuterne was studying painting at the Académie Colarossi in Paris when she met Modigliani in 1917. Their shared life unfolded in the artistic community of Montparnasse, and they had a daughter in 1918. Hébuterne's own work has long received far less attention than Modigliani's portraits of her. The painting therefore belongs to a small and still incompletely documented body of work associated with her.
