Sunlight in the Blue Room

Anna Ancher completed Sunlight in the Blue Room in 1891, after years of making everyday life in Skagen central to her art. The sitter is her daughter Helga, and the setting belonged to Helga's grandmother at Brøndum's Hotel. For Ancher, the work marked a concentrated study of how sunlight could transform an ordinary interior. She grew up at the hotel, which became a meeting place for the artists now known as the Skagen Painters. Because Denmark's Royal Academy did not yet admit women, she trained at Vilhelm Kyhn's private drawing school in Copenhagen. Her command of color and light helped move Danish painting toward modernism while keeping her work rooted in the community she knew best.
