The Artist's Wife Reading

By Michael Ancher

1881Naturalism

Michael Ancher painted The Artist's Wife Reading in 1881, one year after he and Anna Ancher married. The portrait presents Anna at the beginning of a career that would make her one of Denmark's most important modern painters. Michael had first visited Skagen in 1874 after studying at the Royal Danish Academy, and he soon made the town his home. His relationship with Anna connected him closely to both the Brøndum family and the growing Skagen artist colony. The couple became a lasting center of that community while pursuing distinct artistic careers. This early portrait gains special meaning because its sitter was not only his wife and model but an ambitious painter in her own right.
