Christmas Day 1900

Michael Ancher completed Christmas Day 1900 in 1903, developing it from a family photograph made during the holiday named in the title. The finished work brings together three generations of women from Anna Ancher's Brøndum family. Among them are Anna and the couple's daughter Helga, linking the painting to subjects both parents had portrayed for years. Michael repeatedly returned to family and close friends as records of life in Skagen. He and Anna helped make their home a center of the local artist colony, and both later gave major groups of works to Skagens Museum. Here a private family gathering becomes a record of continuity within the community that shaped their art.
