Édouard Manet
A Parisian painter who shocked the Salon with modern subjects painted in flat, bold areas of colour. He was close to the Impressionists but never showed in their exhibitions.

War breaks out. Manet stays in Paris and serves in the National Guard during the siege, alongside Degas.
- 1874The first Impressionist exhibition
His friends hold the first Impressionist exhibition. Manet refuses to join them and keeps sending his work to the Salon.
Worked with Claude MonetArgenteuilIn July and August 1874 Manet stayed at his family's house in Gennevilliers, just across the Seine from Monet at Argenteuil. The two saw each other often that summer, sometimes joined by Renoir, and Manet took up their lighter palette and painting out of doors.
