Joaquín Sorolla
A Spanish painter from Valencia whose open-air paintings are famous for the brilliant sunlight of its coast. Orphaned at two, he entered Valencia's Academy of San Carlos at fifteen, and was a friend of John Singer Sargent.

Sargent and Sorolla were friends and mutual admirers — critics called them 'children of Velázquez'. After time together in Madrid in 1903 they exchanged works: Sorolla gave a study for Sad Inheritance!, Sargent a watercolour now in the Museo Sorolla.
