John Singer Sargent
An American born in Florence who became the most sought-after portrait painter of his time, painting Edwardian society on both sides of the Atlantic from his London studio. He also painted watercolours and outdoor scenes on his travels.

Sargent met Monet in Paris through his friend Paul Helleu. After visiting him at Giverny in 1885, Sargent began to paint out of doors in the Impressionist manner.
