This small oil-on-wood panel is one of Georges Seurat's early works, made before the fully developed Neo-Impressionist technique that would later define his reputation. The Met notes that it appeared in the studio inventory made after Seurat's death as "panel no. 1," linking it to a group of early pictures of solitary figures absorbed in thought or work. The compact scene already shows Seurat's interest in controlled light effects, strong silhouettes, and simplified geometric structure. Details visible beyond the trees connect the setting to Paris, across the Seine from the Louvre. Its modest scale and quiet subject make it a useful early counterpoint to the large, systematic compositions Seurat produced later in the 1880s.
