Rue de l'Epicerie, Rouen (Effect of Sunlight)

During his fourth stay in Rouen, Camille Pissarro found a viewpoint overlooking the rue de l'Epicerie and the Friday market on the Place de Haute-Vieille-Tour. This sunlit version is the only one of his three treatments of the view to show the market in progress. The animated crowd and stalls fill the foreground while the towers of Rouen Cathedral rise above the surrounding roofs. Pissarro's broken brushwork turns the city's stone, slate, and shifting daylight into a lively field of color.
