Eva Gonzalès

A Parisian painter, the daughter of the novelist Emmanuel Gonzalès, who became Édouard Manet's model and then, in 1869, his only formal pupil. She never showed with the Impressionists but painted modern Paris life in their loose manner, and died in childbirth in 1883, less than a week after Manet.

Gonzalès became Manet's model and then, in February 1869, his only formal pupil. He painted her at work at an easel for the Salon of 1870, and her early pictures answer his so closely that she developed her own manner only from about 1872. She died in May 1883, less than a week after him.

When Gonzalès joined Manet's studio, Morisot wrote to her sister Edma that Manet kept holding up Mademoiselle Gonzalès to her as the example of composure and perseverance. Biographers read the letters as jealousy of the young pupil while Manet was painting her portrait.
