Berthe Morisot

A French painter who trained alongside her sister Edma, met Édouard Manet in 1868 and married his brother Eugène in 1874. That year she was the only woman among the founding exhibitors of the first Impressionist exhibition, and she showed in all but one of the eight.

When Gonzalès joined Manet's studio, Morisot wrote to her sister Edma that Manet kept holding up Mademoiselle Gonzalès to her as the example of composure and perseverance. Biographers read the letters as jealousy of the young pupil while Manet was painting her portrait.

Morisot met Manet while copying in the Louvre in 1868 and posed for him again and again over the next six years. In 1874 she married his younger brother Eugène, which made Manet her brother-in-law; unlike him, she joined the Impressionists' independent exhibitions that same year.
