Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriël
An Amsterdam-born painter and etcher of the Hague School, who in 1858 brought Anton Mauve to paint at Oosterbeek, the 'Dutch Barbizon'. His clear, bright colour set him apart from the school's grey tones: 'Our land is not grey,' he said, 'even when the weather is grey.'

Dutch realist painters in The Hague, 1860-1890, influenced by the Barbizon school. Mauve, Jacob Maris and Gabriël are first generation; Breitner second. Van Gogh trained with Mauve but is not counted a member.
