Anton Mauve
A leading painter of the Hague School, known for soft grey-green landscapes with sheep and farm workers. He was related to Vincent van Gogh by marriage and gave him his first painting lessons.

Mauve, married to Van Gogh's cousin Jet Carbentus, gave him his first lessons in oil and watercolour: three weeks in his studio in December 1881, then lent him money for a studio. They fell out in early 1882 over Vincent's relationship with Sien Hoornik. Van Gogh later dedicated a blossoming-orchard painting to Mauve's memory (1888).
