Vincent van Gogh

A Dutch painter who worked for only about ten years, producing hundreds of paintings in bold colour and thick, visible brushstrokes. He sold very little in his lifetime.

Mauve, married to Van Gogh's cousin Jet Carbentus, gave him his first lessons in oil and watercolour: three weeks in his studio in December 1881, then lent him money for a studio. They fell out in early 1882 over Vincent's relationship with Sien Hoornik. Van Gogh later dedicated a blossoming-orchard painting to Mauve's memory (1888).

Van Gogh and Signac met at Père Tanguy's paint shop and in 1887 painted together along the Seine at Asnières; Signac recalled Vincent 'in a blue zinc worker's smock' with dots of colour on his sleeves. Signac visited him in Arles in March 1889.
