Henri Matisse
A French artist, above all a painter, known for his colour and his fluid, original drawing, and often ranked with Picasso among the artists who defined early 20th-century art. The intense colour of his work from 1900 to 1905 made him a leader of the Fauves, and in 1917 he moved to Nice on the French Riviera.

Matisse spent summer 1904 with Signac at Saint-Tropez, working alongside him and Henri-Edmond Cross, and learned the Divisionist dot. The result, Luxe, Calme et Volupté, is counted the starting point of Fauvism; Signac bought it.

At the Salon d’Automne a critic calls the painters of wild colour ‘fauves’ — wild beasts.
Worked with André DerainCollioureMatisse and Derain spent summer 1905 painting together at Collioure and came back with the unnatural colour that got them called 'les fauves' at that autumn's Salon d'Automne.

Salon d'Automne 1905 (Fauves)
The show where critic Louis Vauxcelles called Matisse, Derain and their circle 'les fauves'. Rousseau's jungle picture The Hungry Lion hung near Matisse's work, though Rousseau was not a Fauve.
