Henri Rousseau
A self-taught painter who worked as a Paris customs officer, hence his nickname Le Douanier. His dreamlike jungles were mocked at first, then admired by the avant-garde after he exhibited with the Fauves in 1905.

Salon d'Automne 1905 (Fauves)
The show where critic Louis Vauxcelles called Matisse, Derain and their circle 'les fauves'. Rousseau's jungle picture The Hungry Lion hung near Matisse's work, though Rousseau was not a Fauve.
